If you think that any pencil can give you a good portrait then think again because even that requires proper selection.

For initial shading, it is necessary to use a 2B pencil because only 2B pencil is used in commercial stage for all the initial things, but people find some problems related to these pencils that the work done by these pencils does not look finished. So, for this reason never let your hands touch the paper. The B pencils are effective in this way that they have soft lead and are easy to use. Apart from B pencils, if you use H pencils, then you find them hard to use because of their hard lead. The H pencils can leave dents on the paper. H pencils are not suitable for initial stage because for using H pencils in shading you have to learn some shading tactics. If you cannot control the touching of hand in using the 2B pencil, then it is necessary to use an art fixative on the drawing to prevent smudging and fingerprints. The fixative gives a great finish to your work and it also provides you the freedom of choosing matte or glossy touch for your painting. So, always use a 2B pencil for initial shading, but make sure that you are using a fixative upon it.
